The Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award The Abraham Lincoln Award is awarded annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through twelve in Illinois. The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois' most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA).1
Alex Awards The Alex Awards are given annually to 10 adult books that are appealing to young adults. The titles are selected by the YALSA Adult Books for Young Adults Task Force from the previous year's publishing and are named after Margaret Alexander Edwards, a young adult librarian known to her friends as "Alex."2
Coretta Scott King Award The Coretta Scott King Award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table. Recipients are authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."3
The Edgars® Awards The Edgar Allan Poe Awards® (the "Edgars®") are named after the Mystery Writers Association’s patron saint, Edgar Allan Poe, and are awarded to authors of distinguished work in various categories of the genre.4
The Michael L. Printz Award The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.5
John Newbery Medal The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.6
Pura Belpré Award The Pura Belpré Award is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking (REFORMA).7
Rebecca Caudill Award The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award is awarded annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades four through eight in Illinois and is sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council, the Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois Association of Teachers of English.8
The Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction The annual Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction goes to a meritorious book published in the previous year for children or young adults. This award was established to encourage writers to focus on historical fiction.9
