The US government told the Native Americans that the evacuation was for their safety and protection during, but their lives became much more difficult as they were essentially stripped of their property and freedom for several years. A requiem is a song written to honor a person who has died and manumission is the official freeing of a slave. Fortune's Bones honors the life and remembers the death of real person, a man named Fortune. The requiem starts with a mystery: there is an unidentified set of bones that has been on display in a Connecticut museum for more than 200 years. Through the requiem, we learn the identity of the skeleton and about the life of Fortune and his family, all of whom lived in slavery. Sections of the requiem are told from the different perspectives: the doctor who owned Fortune, Fortune's wife Dinah, and Fortune himself.
