Celestine Prophesy

James Redfield (1994), 246 pages

An adventure novel, that bases many of the founding principles of the ideas in the book on philosphy. The book begins with a middle-aged male scholar, who is hearing about a mysterious ancient Peruvian manuscript. He discovers- through a series of odd 'coincidences' that 'The Manuscript' holds 'nine Insights' that are said to give knowledge about modern spirituality. Through battles with bad soldiers, and men-of-the-church, the main character learns all of the Insights, and is faced with a tough decision on what to do with this knowledge.

The plot of this humorous mystery novel revolves around 15-year old, autistic savant Christopher Boone, who has behavioral problems such as not smiling, saying rude things (even if they are the truth), and hating France. His only salvation is his excellence at math, believe it or not! ***SPOILER ALERT*** Our valiant hero Chris goes off on a Sherlock Homes-inspired quest to find out who murdered his neighbor's dog and while doing so, learns startling facts about his parents'divorce, one being that he was the cause of it. This exceptional novel gives the reader a completely new perspective of life which can prove to be not only inspiring, but ironically humorous as well.

I liked the book but it could jump ahead at times. ****SPOILER ALERT**** I felt they could have saved the Sneaker Clause as the big finish and not as some random chapter before the end. The book was overall a very interesting read and if there ever were a another book I would love to read it.
