Two Kentucky girls, Ivy June from Thunder Creek and Catherine Combs from Lexington, have been chosen to participate in a first-ever seventh-grade exchange program. First Ivy June leaves the hills and coal mining area of Thunder Creek to stay two weeks with Catherine's well-to-do family in Lexington. Then Catherine comes to visit Ivy June in Thunder Creek. Each girl records her honest feelings about the experience in a journal. Then, without warning, both girls face terror about the safety of their loved ones. Is their recent friendship strong enough to get them through a difficult time?
