Johanna is a serving girl to Dame Margery Kempe, a renowned medieval holy woman who is often moved to tears in her prayer. For all her devoutedness, however, Dame Margery cares little for the misery she sees everyday, especially the suffering Johanna endures while they are on a pilgrimage to Rome. After being abandonned by Dame Margery, Johanna must face the trials and adventures of traveling on her own through the Alps and the dangerous streets of Rome.
