Corner of the Universe

Ann M. Martin (2002), 189 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 8th Grade
Category: Realistic Fiction
Twelve-year-old Hattie Owen planned a quiet, predictable summer. Things turn out differently than Hattie expected when two new people come her life. Hattie becomes fast friends with Leila despite their very different backgrounds. Hattie's family are the pillars of Millerton society while Leila and her family travel the country with the carnival. Hattie's second new friend is even more surprising; Hattie meets an uncle that she never knew existed. Uncle Adam is 21 years old, but sometimes he acts as young as Hattie. Hattie thinks she will be able to handle Adam's differences, but her choices lead to tragedy.
