Friend Called Anne

Carol Lee (2005), 163 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 9th Grade
Category: Biography
Before she went into hiding, Anne Frank lived the life of a normal girl in Amsterdam and had a best friend from school named Jacqueline Van Maarsen. The girls were virtually inseparable and spent time watching movies, going out for ice cream, and talking about boys until Anne and her family went into hiding to escape the Nazis. In addition to the new information about Anne's life, this book reveals Jacqueline's own situation--she was half-Jewish, and midway though the war, her mother converted her to Catholicism in order to get her off of the Jewish register.

I was deeply touched when i read this book! It talks about Anne's best friend Jacqueline, it talks about the friendship they shared and about what it was like for two friends to be parted forever. It also talks about the horror happening right outside her door that Anne doesn't write about because she was shut out from the rest of the world. This book really showed me what it was like for a girl my age to have everything taken away from you. This is now one of my favorite books ever! You gotta read this!
